"16 Tons" was written by Merle Travis in 1946 and released in July 1947 by Columbia on his album Folk Songs of The Hills. Tennessee Ernie Ford released it in 1955 as the B side to his cover of "You Don't Have to Be a Baby to Cry."

This song was in Merle Travis's album "Folk Song of the Hills" in 1947 - the same year Washington assaulted union workers with the Taft Heartly Act, because in 1946 was the closest the US ever came to a national strike. Millions of working people went on strike in 1946. Washington wanted to make sure that would never occur again.

I had that treat a number of years ago, Jeff Beck playing with ZZ Top in South Florida! That was one of the most amazing shows I ever went to, Jeff Beck was a musical genius far ahead this time! We will miss him sorely! Safe Journeys Jeff!

I have heard this song many times but not by ZZ Top and not recently, but change the lyrics for Canadians from Company store to CRA and it is fitting.
